GS1 collaboration with OASIS on UBL

GS1 has taken the initiative to develop a guide showing how to use the UBL technical framework with GS1 identification and data standards. This is to respond to the need of some GS1 users that face requirements to use UBL v2.1 (ISO/IEC 19845:2015) schemas.

A GS1 Guide on the usage of GS1 keys in OASIS UBL messages will provide guidance on how to apply a master data approach with GS1 identification keys when using UBL. A draft version of this guide will be submitted to the GS1 Global Standard Management Process. This will ensure that all interested parties will have the opportunity to contribute and to comment on the document. It is expected that the guide will be ratified and published by the end of 2016.

GS1 sharing standards

GS1 creates a common foundation for business by uniquely identifying, accurately capturing and automatically sharing vital information about products, locations and assets. The GS1 standards portfolio includes a comprehensive set of EDI messages based on the internationally recognised UN/EDIFACT and XML syntaxes. GS1 has a long tradition of partnering with other standard bodies. The GS1 System Architecture encourages normative references to and application guidance from ISO, UN/CEFACT, IETF and W3C. The work of standards bodies other than these four should also be considered and, if suitable, adopted.


OASIS is a nonprofit consortium that drives the development, convergence and adoption of open standards for the global information society. The Universal Business Language (UBL), developed by the OASIS open standards consortium, is used routinely by government agencies for electronic invoicing across Europe as well as in countries from other continents. UBL is also used in various sectors of trade & industry for exchanging electronic business transactions in supply chain applications.
