As confirmation of the growing interest within Europe and especially Italy for the Universal Business Language (UBL) OASIS Standard, as the lingua franca of eBusiness, the third annual UBL International Conference will be held in Rome. UBL 2008 follows previous successful events in Copenhagen (2006) and Madrid (2007). The conference represents an important forum for those interested in interoperability, Open Standards and Open Source. There will be presentations on the current state and future prospects for UBL including e-Invoicing development, as well as UBL’s deployment within the ebXML framework (electronic business XML).

UBL International will run from April 21st until the 24th at the headquarters of the Italian National Council of Economy and Labour (CNEL) which is endorsing the conference.

The first day, April 21st will be a full day of free presentations including an ebXML workshop sponsored by OASIS,
the international open standards consortium that ratified and continues to advance UBL.

The remainder of the conference will be a series of professional development seminars facilitated by some of world’s leading experts. Hosted by Document Engineering Services, this will be a unique opportunity for Italian companies to learn about the UBL standard directly from its developers.

The UBL International Conference is organized by Crane Softwrights Ltd and the FTI (Information Technology Forum), UBL ITALIA. The conference involves a number of supporting organizations, including OASIS, UNI (the Italian national

standardization body), and three Italian professional associations of managers of the Financial Value Chain (CFOs, Treasurers and Credit Managers).

A call for additional sponsors, presentations and seminars is currently open and available to both Italian and international organizations.

More information about the event and its organization is available at:

“Practical Universal Business Language Deploymentâ€? (formerly titled “Practical Use of UBL Artefactsâ€?) overviews the Universal Business Language (http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/ubl/) suite of publicly-available files, process and methodology descriptions, deployment strategies and documentation from a technical perspective of the roles that all these artefacts play in information systems and how to work with each artefact with hands-on experience.

UBL, the Universal Business Language, is the product of an international effort to define a royalty-free library of standard electronic XML business documents such as purchase orders and invoices. Developed in an open and accountable OASIS Technical Committee with participation from a variety of industry data standards organizations, UBL is designed to plug directly into existing business, legal, auditing, and records management practices, eliminating the re-keying of data in existing fax- and paper-based supply chains and providing an entry point into electronic commerce for small and medium-sized businesses.

This is a course supporting the deployment and use of UBL artefacts, but this is not a course in the interpretation of specific UBL information items in a business context or the adaptation of financial systems to the semantics expressed by UBL. The instructor is not in a position to offer financial or legal advice regarding the application or suitability of UBL to any particular scenario or purpose.

Hands-on exercises are provided in a turnkey fashion for a Java-based environment under either Windows command-line or Linux shell invocation. Students may use any editing tool they wish for modifying the exercise files when completing the exercise objectives.

The following topics are covered through the class:

parties and document types – use case and business documents

information items – data description spreadsheets

model conventions – Naming and Design Rules

documents and document models – schema expressions

model semantics – data dictionary

XPath enumerations

methodology for code list and value validation

Understanding the Universal Business Language – Tim McGrath – Port Community Systems (presented in English)

A guide to understanding the UBL business library and its document models.

The OASIS standard XML vocabulary for business documents is known as UBL (the Universal Business Language). UBL defines standard XML constructs for common components such as Party, Address, and Item as well as business documents such as Order, Invoice, and Waybill. This workshop explains why UBL exists and what is provided as part of the UBL standard package. It also explains the meaning of many key UBL components. The objective is to enable students to not only understand the principles of UBL but also the way UBL works in practice. The target audience are managers and business analysts and the material does not require prior exposure to UBL or XML.

Tuesday October 2, 2007 (a one-day hands-on course):

Practical Code List Implementation – Crane Softwrights Ltd. (presented in English)

This one-day class overviews in detail the genericode representation and validation of controlled vocabularies such as code lists and identifier lists for XML documents of any XML vocabulary.

“Practical Code List Implementationâ€? overviews in detail the representation and validation of controlled vocabularies such as code lists and identifier lists for XML documents of any XML vocabulary. The OASIS genericode format (a work item of the OASIS Code List Representation Technical Committee http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/codelist/) is used for the representation of values, and the OASIS UBL Methodology for Code List and Value Validation (a work item of the OASIS Universal Business Language Technical Committee http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/ubl/) is used for validating instances of any XML document model with controlled values.

Note that while UBL code lists and instances are used in the class for example and instruction, students are encouraged to bring to the hands-on class their own code lists and their own business document instances of their own XML vocabularies to supplement the exercises. Time is provided in class for students to create simple code lists and validation files for their own business documents as pro-forma artefacts that can be embellished after class into their own production files.

This is a course supporting the development and deployment of controlled vocabularies, including meta data specification, list maintenance, list restriction, list extension and the implementation and application of validation processes against instances that include constrained information items.

This technically-oriented course is written for both the user of UBL (as day two of the three-day configuration of the Practical Universal Business Language Deployment) and for anyone using controlled vocabularies with any XML document vocabulary. For the implementer and specifying authority for a controlled vocabulary it is important to understand candidate opportunities to work with the artefacts and to gain hands-on experience in their use and applicability in the context of the documented methodologies and deployment strategies.

The course addresses the following topics related to controlled vocabularies:

code list and constrained value concepts

controlled vocabulary representation

controlled vocabulary extension and restriction

methodology for controlled vocabulary and value validation

an approach to design and customization of UBL to satisfy specific requirements

The OASIS standard XML vocabulary for business documents is known as UBL (the Universal Business Language). UBL is establishing itself as the language of choice for a variety of electronic commerce applications. These applications often require some refinement of the standard structures. This workshop explains the design principles behind UBL and how it can be adapted to suit the requirements of different business processes. This includes customizing existing UBL structures and creating new document types. The objective is to enable students to understand the issues involved in customizing UBL and also how to develop specific implementations that suit the requirements of their context of use. The target audience are system analysts and developers responsible for the implementation of document interfaces. Some background in UBL and/or XML is recommended (such as completion of the “Understanding the Universal Business Languageâ€? workshop).
